Eligibility
Entries must be student writing produced between Jan. 1,
2009, and Dec. 31, 2009. Entries may be submitted in two
categories:
1. Individual student writing
2. Whole publication
Only one entry per student will be accepted
in the individual student writing category. Only one entry
per publication will be accepted in the whole publication
category. Students may enter a submission in both categories.
Individual
student writing entries don’t need to be affiliated
with a school. In each of the categories, Weekly Reader will
select a winner at the elementary, middle, and high school
levels. There will be a total of six winners.
Deadline
All entries must be postmarked by March 19, 2010. No late
entries will be accepted.
Prizes
Winners will be chosen in elementary,
middle, and high school categories for a total of three winning
authors and three winning publications.
Each winning whole
publication will be awarded a $500 check (payable to the
school) and a plaque. Each publication will also receive
a round-trip flight and one-night hotel stay for a student,
parent, and teacher to attend the awards luncheon in Washington,
D.C. Teacher sponsors of winning publications will receive
a one-year full classroom subscription to the Weekly Reader
publication of his or her choice. (Elementary schools will
receive any Weekly
Reader or WR
News edition;
middle and high schools will receive Current Events or READ.)
Each
winner of an individual student writing award will receive
a check for $500, payable to the student. Each winner will
also receive a round-trip flight and one-night hotel stay
for the student and a parent to attend the awards luncheon
in Washington, D.C. In addition, Weekly Reader will publish
(or republish) the student’s piece, either in one of
its magazines or on its Web site.
Weekly Reader will contact all winning schools and students.
Winners will be honored at the annual Association of Educational
Publishers luncheon in June in Washington, D.C.
