Weekly Reader's Student
Publishing Contest honors the best in nonfiction publications
and writing by students in grades 3-12. The contest is intended
to inspire young people to tell compelling, true stories through
good reporting and writing. Best of all, this year it's free!
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT WRITING
Any piece of student nonfiction writing between 500 and 2,500
words is eligible, including memoirs, essays, and stories
about news events. Each entry should include:
- crisp writing and accurate information;
- compelling
and engaging word choice;
- principles of good writing and/or
reporting.
Note: Entries do not have to be published and
do not need to be affiliated with a school.
WHOLE PUBLICATION
Student publications, including newspapers, magazines, and
literary magazines that include nonfiction, are eligible.
Each entry should include:
- clear, interesting writing and
good grammar;
- an attractive layout and effective photo use;
- a
variety of voices and diversity of opinion.
Note: Any electronic
complement to the student publication—such as an official
student-created Web site—will also be considered in
judging the entry.
