Educational publishers association honors McGraw-Hill
for outstanding talent development
New York, NY--Dec. 3, 2009--The Association of Educational
Publishers (AEP), the nonprofit member organization serving the
educational resource industry, today honored McGraw-Hill Education
with its inaugural Talent Development Innovator Award. The award,
established through the support off Nelson B. Heller, Ph.D., recognizes
individuals and companies that strive to create the next generation
of successful industry leaders through their outstanding hiring,
professional development, and career advancement programs.
The award also works in concert with AEP's Improving Learning Resources
through Diversity (ILRTD) project, which is funded in part by the
State of Pennsylvania through the Department of Community and Economic
Development. ILRTD seeks to create jobs and improve educational
outcomes through rigorous recruitment of minority professionals
into the educational publishing field. This initiative aims to reduce
unintended cultural bias in instructional materials by shaping an
industry work force that more accurately represents the face of
America's classrooms.
McGraw-Hill was chosen for its vast investment in creating the
future leaders of educational publishing, from its internship program
focusing on new recruits to leadership and management programs that
invest in the skills of current, valuable employees.
The company is also dedicated to recruiting from a diverse talent
pool to ensure that the voices of all cultures are present in their
publications.
"Through the Talent Development Innovator Award program, our
goal is to encourage innovative practices in recruitment and professional
development to ensure that educational publishing continues to thrive
and serve the next generations of educators and students,"
said Charlene Gaynor, CEO of AEP. "McGraw-Hill is truly setting
the standard in this arena."

Potential recipients of the Talent Development Award include organizations
that have one or more of the following:
- Effective recruiting programs, including outreach to high school
and college populations making career choices, and also programs
that encourage ethnic diversity in our professional ranks by specifically
recruiting talent from minority populations
- Training programs, including successful courses themselves or
company support for such programs (such as reimbursement for completed
professional development courses)
- Mentoring programs that pair young professionals with more experienced
industry talent to help them advance through the ranks to assume
more responsibility
- Executive search and placement programs helping to bring new
talent into our industry from other industries or helping professionals
within our industry qualify for and find higher level positions
within their own organizations or others in our industry
Dan Caton, Executive Vice President of McGraw-Hill School Education,
was on hand to accept the award at AEP's annual Hall of Fame Breakfast
and Induction Ceremony. This prestigious event honors three individuals
who have made significant and lasting contributions to the educational
resource community.
