Even in Tough Economic Times the Educational Publishing
Industry Embodies Spirit of Service and Philanthropy
Recent survey by Association of Educational Publishers
(AEP) shows member donations to education totaling more than $4.8
million annually
Logan Twp., NJ--June 10, 2009--In tough economic
times it is often hard to get companies to think in philanthropic
terms. Yet, there is one industry that has not abandoned this mantra,
especially when their expertise is needed most--the educational
publishing industry. In a recent survey of its more than 300 members,
the AEP found that as an industry its members have donated more
than $4.8 million in educational materials and more than 30,000
volunteer hours annually.
Comprised of both small and large publishers, as well as service
providers and associations serving the learning community, AEP's
membership embraces the vision of a thriving educational publishing
industry that provides quality materials for every educator and
student. Many companies donate to local schools, charities, and
non-profits, as well as education associations. Other initiatives
include:
- Providing scholarships to student teachers and donating student
teacher starter kits;
- Assisting scientists in the pedagogical and didactical field
to finish their doctorates;
- Donating materials to churches and schools that have been hit
with a disaster such as a tornado, fire, or hurricane;
- Helping with a homeless shelter education program; and
- Contributing time and money to non-education related programs
such as Habitat for Humanity.
"Educational publishing is a very generous industry, giving
back in every way they can whether it's time, money, or materials,"
said Charlene Gaynor, CEO of AEP. "AEP members understand that
a thriving community can lay the foundation for a superior education,
and they are committed to exploring all avenues of philanthropy
to ensure our children's future."
Additionally, every year AEP donates the materials from its awards
programs to needy schools, providing them with the best educational
products of the year.
