Educational Publishing Hall of Fame Announces Honorees

September 8, 2003

New Jersey—Kathy Hurley: a visionary in educational technology. Mark Levine: pioneer in parent and children’s publishing. Fred Rogers: the original benevolent instructor to both parents and children. Nominated by their peers and chosen by AEP’s Board of Directors, these three extraordinary individuals will be inducted into The Association of Educational Publishers’ Hall of Fame in 2003.

As the only award of this nature for the educational publishing industry, induction into AEP’s Hall of Fame is a prestigious honor. Members of the industry make nominations for the Hall of Fame throughout the year; AEP’s Board of Directors makes the final selection and invites the inductees to attend the formal ceremony.

  • Kathleen M. Hurley, vice president, education industry alliances, Plato Learning. Ms. Hurley began her career in education working with learning disabled students. Positions at IBM, Mindscape, Grolier. SkillsBank, The Learning Company, and DLM led her to the educational technology arena where she became a leading advocate and spokesperson. Kathy’s pioneering vision for technology and students opened new channels of communication between schools, teachers, publishers and technology experts.
  • Mark Levine, publisher, KIDS DISCOVER. Mr. Levine made his first mark on the publishing world with American Baby. Working with his family, he took a small brochure—delivered by hand to new mothers—and transformed it into one of the strongest niche marketing companies in America, using the concept of integrated marketing before it became popular. As the founder and publisher of KIDS DISCOVER, a non-fiction, no-advertising magazine, he again broke new ground. KIDS DISCOVER has received several awards for its lush design and content that appeals to kids’ intelligence.
  • Fred Rogers (posthumous), Family Communications Inc. Mr. Rogers is famous for his television show that struck the rare balance between being entertaining and instructional. His company, Family Communications Inc., reaches far beyond the small screen. Through books, workshops, the Internet, and various other forms of media, FCI supports healthy emotional, social, and intellectual development at all ages.

“AEP is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these three outstanding individuals,” said Robert W. Harper, AEP board president. “Throughout their careers they have strived to contribute to the education of children, both at home and at school.”

The induction ceremony will take place Thursday, December 4, 2003, at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Previous honorees include Dick Robinson, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer, Scholastic Corporation; Leanna Landsmann, publisher of Time for Kids; Nader Darehshori; former Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Houghton Mifflin Company; Claude Mayberry, Publisher of Science Weekly; and Peter Li, Chairman of the Board of Peter Li Education Group.
