Association of Educational Publishers Inducts
Three into Hall of Fame
December 2, 2005
Richard Spaulding, Garry C. Myers, III and William
E. Evans Receive Highest Individual Honor Accorded in Educational
Publishing Industry
Logan Township, NJ—The Association
of Educational Publishers (AEP) inducted three educational publishing
luminaries into its Hall of Fame at a ceremony held December 1 at
the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in New York City. Before an audience of
approximately 300, Richard Spaulding, Garry C. Myers III, and William
E. Evans were all recognized with the highest individual honor awarded
in the industry for their long-term, exemplary contributions.
Richard “Dick” Spaulding, currently a
member of the Management Executive Committee and Board of Directors
at Scholastic, Inc., joined the firm in 1960. Much like King Midas,
whatever Spaulding touched turned to gold and his nickname of “the
wise man” soon became known throughout the company. Beyond
his magnanimous personality, Spaulding was a true leader in the
development of databases and the tremendous value of knowing how
to gather and process information to gain unique marketing insights.
Long before the personal computer was even commonplace, Spaulding
developed data models that are the precursor of today’s database
systems. His work enabled Scholastic to utilize advanced marketing
segmentation techniques that relied on fact instead of the guesswork
that other companies had to rely on. Such innovation was, and continues
to be, a staple of the entire Scholastic organization.
Garry C. Myers III, former CEO of Highlights for
Children, was inducted posthumously, though his spirit was surely
present as the entire Board and a host of current and past staff
were on hand to celebrate this achievement. Myers joins his grandparents
— Dr. Garry Cleveland Myers and Caroline Clark Myers, founders
of Highlights for Children — in the AEP Hall of Fame (inducted
in 1996). Garry built on their legacy and turned Highlights into
one of the most recognizable brands in the U.S. In addition to the
flagship periodical, today’s Highlights organization earns
revenue from continuities, ancillary product lines, and catalog
sales. But Myers will best be remembered as a man of unparalleled
honesty who believed that business activities should always be guided
by the highest of ethical standards. This belief transcended the
entire Highlights organization, perhaps the underlining reason for
such corporate success during his tenure.
William E. “Bill” Evans, CEO of Evan-Moor
Educational Publishers, started his company in his parent’s
garage in 1979 with co-founders Joy Evans and Jo Ellen Moore. Little
did he know that from such humble roots would emerge a company that
today is a 65-employee publishing house with 450 titles found in
over 1,500 retail outlets. Evans will always give credit to his
employees for any and all achievements, yet it is Evans himself
who is the skilled leader and thinker that has repeatedly made the
right choice whenever called upon. Evans was one of the first in
the industry to realize the power of the Internet, though it was
still in its infancy. For example, he used online catalogs and e-newsletters
long before other publishers. He also realized that borders for
learning and sales potential went far beyond the ones in the U.S,
and made international travel and market development a regular part
of his business protocol including attendance at the GLI section
of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Always a man quick with
a joke or a toast, Evans smile and laughter are omnipresent, and
he is one of the most liked individuals in the entire field of educational
publishing.
