Representative Mike Castle honored by AEP
Congressman recognized for commitment to improving
education
WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 8,
2006 – Last night, the Association of Educational Publishers
(AEP) presented Congressman Mike Castle (R-DE) with its Friend
of Education Award for outstanding and significant contribution
to the field of education. Dennis Hand, AEP's Government Relations
Committee Chair, presented the award at a reception held in the
Holeman and First Amendment Lounges of the National Press Club
Building.
"Representative Castle has been instrumental in a number
of key legislative initiatives regarding education," said
Hand. "From the No Child Left Behind Act, to the reauthorization
of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, to his continued
support of the Head Start and 21st Century Competitiveness Programs,
the best interests of our schools, and more importantly our children,
are always foremost in his mind."
Rep. Castle has been especially attentive to the needs of the
supplemental educational publishing industry. He played an integral
role in amending the IDEA conference notes to include specific
language regarding the use of supplementals in early intervention
programs. A regular ally to AEP, he also spoke at the association's
inaugural Washington Insider event last year.
The Friend of Education Award is presented to an individual not primarily
engaged in education who has made outstanding and significant contributions
to the field. Previous recipients include Athlete Michael Jordan,
Film Maker Ken Burns, and Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.
