Association of Educational Publishers (AEP)
Recognizes 2005 Award Winners
June 21, 2005
Golden Lamps, Gold Beacon Highlight Awards Presented
Washington, DC (June 20, 2005) – The Association
of Educational Publishers (AEP) recently recognized the outstanding
educational products of 2005 as part of the AEP Educational Publishing
Summit held, June 6-8 at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC.
Highlighting the award honors was the presentation of the 39th annual
Golden Lamp Awards, which in the supplemental educational publishing
are held in the same esteem as the Oscars are in the motion picture
industry.
The 2005 Golden Lamp Awards were presented in four
categories: Educational Technology, Instructional Materials, Books,
and Periodicals. The winners were as follows.
- NetTrekker/Thinkronize, based in Cincinnati,
Ohio, won in the category of Educational Technology for
their netTrekker educational software product, which provides
easy access to over 180,000 standards-based, online educational
resources.
- Teacher Created Materials, based-in Huntington
Beach, California, won in the category of Instructional Materials
for their Primary Source Readers program, for expertly combining
quality content for students with superb teacher assistance making
lessons engaging and enduring.
- Gibbs Smith, Publisher, a mid-sized publisher
in Salt Lake City, Utah, won in the Books category for
their Massachusetts Our Home publication that is visually
welcoming and filled with facts and illustrations that make learning
fun.
- The National Wildlife Federation, headquartered
in Reston, Virginia, was honored in the Periodicals category
for their colorful and creative publication titled Your Big
Backyard.
“These Golden Lamp products set the precedent
for the rest of the industry to follow.” said Charlene Gaynor,
AEP Executive Director. “The true beneficiaries of all of
this hard work are the teachers and students in classrooms all across
the country.”
In addition to the Golden Lamps, AEP also presented
a number of additional awards. The Beacon Awards, which recognize
excellence in marketing educational products, honor the single best
entry with a Gold Beacon Award. The Girl Scouts of the United
States of America were recognized for their STUDIO 2B Retention
Kit, which insightfully focuses on strategies to keep members affiliated
with the organization for the long-term.
The AEP-AOL@SCHOOL Technology Leadership Award honors
one company that has demonstrated a unique and original approach
to the implementation of content, media, design and delivery. This
year’s winner was the American Museum of Natural History
for their Ology project, which turned a visit to their Website into
a dynamic exploration of the world of science.
The Distinguished Achievement Awards recognize excellence
in several educational mediums — periodicals, books, websites,
and software — and are judged based on the target markets
they serve; children, young adult, or adult. A full list of winners
for these awards categories can be found at www.AEPweb.org/awards/winners.htm.
“Each year the number of awards increases,” noted Keith
Garton, Board President, “and each year I’m more and
more impressed by the work and creativity, the devotion to quality,
and the imagination evident in the products this industry puts forth.”
