Three of educational publishing's finest to be honored
at annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Breakfast ceremony to be held at New York City's Waldorf=Astoria
LOGAN TWP., NJ (September 12, 2007) - The Association
of Educational Publishers is pleased to announce the 2007 inductees
into the Educational Publishing Hall of Fame. This year's class
includes Dr. Ernest B. Fleishman, Senior Vice President, Education
and Corporate Relations at Scholastic Inc.; Barbara Russell Founder
and (retired) President & CEO
of Options Publishing; and Edward Warnshuis (posthumous), founder
of Technological
Horizons in Education (T.H.E.) Journal. The industry's highest
individual honor, the Hall of Fame recognizes individuals whose
lifetime contributions to educational publishing have shaped and
advanced the industry in profound and enduring ways.
"These individuals dedicated their careers to initiating
and improving dialogue between disparate groups to the benefit
of the schools and students our industry serves," said Charlene
Gaynor, CEO of AEP. "The work of Ernie, Barbara, and Ed has
significantly shaped today's education and publishing landscapes."
Dr. Ernest Fleishman is Senior Vice President,
Education and Corporate Relations for Scholastic Inc. Throughout
his career, he has made a legacy of forging partnerships between
the publishing industry and school districts throughout the country.
As Superintendent of Schools in Greenwich, CT, Dr. Fleishman served
as a member of the National Advisory Council, a platform for dialogue
between Scholastic and its customers. He went on to chair this
committee in 1989, when he joined Scholastic as one of the first
public school officials to join a private sector publishing company.
A former English teacher, Dr. Fleishman is also well known for
his commitment to raising the reading achievement of older, struggling
students. He developed and annually hosts a Literacy Leaders' Institute
(now known as the READ 180 National Summer Institute) and a Superintendents'
Summit. Dr. Fleishman has also been the recipient of a Ford Foundation
Fellowship, a National Institute for the Humanities Fellowship
at Stamford University, an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Williams
College, and will be awarded the M.R. Robinson Award for contribution
to the arts this spring.
Like Dr. Fleishman, Barbara Russell began her
career as a teacher before transitioning into educational publishing
in 1974. During her 19 years at Curriculum Associates, she helped
grow the company from one full-time employee (herself) to 75, often
recruiting and nurturing teachers and other industry neophytes
to follow in her own footsteps. Mrs. Russell is also widely known
throughout the industry for her diligent commitment to the publisher-customer
relationship, which often brought her directly into schools and
classrooms to find out exactly what teachers and students needed
the most from educational materials. In 1993, Mrs. Russell founded
her own company, Options Publishing, which has had year-over-year
double-digit growth since its inception, and where she continued
to be a role model for young professionals in publishing. She recently
retired after selling Options to Haights Cross.
Edward Warnshuis is widely credited as the creator
of today's educational technology market. After a successful career
in aerospace engineering, Mr. Warnshuis took an interest in the
use of technology in education in the early 1970s. He convinced
companies like IBM, Wang, and Digital to begin developing educational
products and founded T.H.E. Journal in 1973 as a place
for them to market these new products to schools. As a testament
to his hard work, when Mr. Warnshuis passed away in 1997, the journal's
circulation had grown from 40,000 to 172,000. Mr. Warnshuis was
also an early and passionate advocate for distance learning, serving
on the board of the United States Distance Learning Association.
The Hall of Fame Breakfast and Induction Ceremony will take place
November 29, 2007, at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. For more
