AEP Awards celebrate the best educational products of 2006
Winners honored at Annual Awards Banquet & Gala
WASHINGTON, DC — JUNE 9, 2006 — Almost
300 publishing and press professionals were on hand at the JW Marriott
Hotel tonight as the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP)
honored the most outstanding educational products of 2006. Awards
were presented at the association's Annual Awards Banquet &
Gala, the culmination of the AEP Educational Publishing Summit.
For the past four decades, the AEP Awards have recognized significant
and excellent achievement in supplemental educational products and
education marketing. Selected by a panel of educators and industry
experts, AEP Award winners earn the right to display the Lamp of
Learning logo, nationally recognized by educators and administrators
as a mark of outstanding quality and achievement.
"We at AEP applaud the ingenuity and intense efforts of all
the finalists and winners in this year's Awards Program," said
AEP Board President Jo-Ann McDevitt. "Their devotion to bringing
the most engaging and stimulating educational materials to life
is an inspiration to all of us, throughout all facets of education."
As always, the highlight of this year's event was the Golden Lamp
Awards. Known throughout the industry as the Oscars of educational
publishing, the Golden Lamp Award recognizes superior use of content,
design and fulfillment of educational mission. This year's honorees
are:
E-Blocks, Positivo Informática (Technology)
From the judges: Representing a unique blend of tradition and technology,
this language learning tool brings time-tested tactile blocks into
a multimedia platform that provides an exciting experience for students.
Text Talk: Robust Vocabulary Instruction (Instructional
Materials)
From the judges: A vocabulary instruction curriculum for grades
K-3, this pedagogically sound product provides practical, researched-based
materials for both students and teachers.
Vocabulary Accelerator, Defined Mind, Inc. (Book)
From the judges: This book tackles what is usually considered a
tedious subject with a fresh outlook and "puts the fun in fundamentals."
Bringing the outside world into the classroom without compromising
its educational mission, the book includes a CD of real songs by
independent bands, which correspond to a workbook of SAT and ACT
words encompassed within the songs’ lyrics.
New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams (Periodical)
From the judges: Edited and written by girls, for girls, it is no
wonder this periodical is extremely effective at reaching its audience.
From the coverage of tough topics, to the language and tone, to
the overall design, this magazine hit the target every time.
Interwrite School Pad (GTCO Calcomp Peripherals) took home
this year's AOL@SCHOOL Technology Leadership Award, which
is granted to one company each year that has demonstrated a unique
and original approach to the implementation of content, media, design
and delivery.
The winners of the 2006 Distinguished Achievement Awards
were also honored at the banquet. A complete list of these winners
