New York—The Association of
Educational Publishers (AEP), TIME magazine and TIME For Kids (TFK)
have announced the winners of the 2004 Student Publishing Awards.
The winners have been invited to accept their awards at AEPs
annual conference in Alexandria, VA on June 8th, 2004 at the Hilton
Alexandria Mark Center. The awards will be presented by Keith Garton,
editorial director of TIME Learning Ventures.
The awards, established in 1998 by AEP and sponsored
by TIME magazine and TIME For Kids, recognize excellence in student-written
and student-produced publishing in three categories: Elementary
School, Middle School and High School publications. Entries were
submitted from 42 states. This year, over 240 entries were received
from across the nation, far surpassing previous entries. The winners
were selected by a judging panel that included news professionals
from TIME, TIME For Kids, timeforkids.com, and CNN.
Over $12,000 in cash and materials are awarded this
year. National winners receive a visit from an editor or art director
from TIME or TIME For Kids for a day, as well as $2,000 in cash
plus educational resources. Regional winners receive a variety of
educational resources for their writing curriculum.
At TIME For Kids, we know that students have
a lot to say about the world we live in and the issues of our day.
The TIME/TFK Student Publishing Awards program encourages students
to strive for excellence in their publishing efforts and provides
a platform for national recognition, said Garton. Celebrating
good writing and reporting by kids is just one of the many ways
we give kids a voice.
