June 9, 2004—Discovering excellence is a vital step in helping
educators, parents, and businesses find the valuable materials they
need to stimulate educational progress in students. The products
and individual companies judged excellent in the crucial field of
supplemental educational publishing were honored with the competitive
and coveted Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Awards June
8 and 9 at The Alexandria Mark Center Hotel in Alexandria, VA.
These prestigious awards grant the recipients not
just the satisfaction of work deemed in highest regard by experts
in the field, but the right to display the trusted Lamp of Learning
logo, a seal of approval that notifies customers and
clients that excellence has been discovered, rewarded and announced.
Hugh Roome, president of the AEP and of Scholastic
International, a member of AEP, said the honor that comes with earning
one of the awards is deeply felt. Its hard to convey
just how important the awards are to the community of writers, editors
and designers who devote their lives to creating great materials
for teachers and children. Roome said. These awards
have for generations been the Pulitzer Prizes of Educational Publishing.
They confer on the recipients unique validation of achievement by
the toughest critics in the profession -- their peers.
The AEP Awards are an annual - and gala - event in
educational publishing and feature:
- The Golden Lamp Awards, honoring the best of the best in four
categories - books, instructional materials, periodicals and technology.
The Golden Lamp identifies superior use of content, design and
fulfillment of a products educational mission.
- The Distinguished Achievement Awards for excellence in an eclectic
and growing product field including educational toys, software,
home and classroom materials, books and magazines, Websites, learning
devices and more.
- The Beacon Awards, which recognize outstanding educational marketing
by sales and contributing staff who deal with the vital task of
bringing a product to consumer awareness. Awards are given for
several media, including display advertising, direct mail and
integrated marketing campaigns, brochures and catalogs.
- The Gold Beacon Award granted to the product judged the most
innovative and appealing marketing tool from among the winners
of The Beacon Award.
- The AOL@SCHOOL Technology Leadership Award, a new award this
year. The award, jointly given by AOL and AEP, recognizes originality
in the implementation of content, media, design and delivery.
The winner was chosen from the technology category entrants in
the Distinguished Achievement Awards.
Before the winners are handed their awards, entries
must undergo rigorous scrutiny by panels of recognized experts in
publishing. The judges look for more than educational interest and
competence, They also look for that extra spark that says,
Yes, this makes kids ... want to learn, noted
Charlene Gaynor, executive director of AEP.
It is that very aspect of excellence that confers
such value to the AEP Awards. Read the complete
list of winners.
