Twelve Winners Named in 2002 Student Publishing Awards
From TIME and TIME for KIDS Magazines

New York—TIME and TIME For
Kids announced the winners of the 2002 Student Publishing Awards
at the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) annual
conference in Washington, D.C. The awards were presented by Keith
Garton, president of TIME Learning Ventures, at a luncheon on Wednesday,
June 5 at the Capital Hilton.
The awards, established in 1998 by AEP and sponsored
by TIME and TIME for Kids, recognize excellence in student-written
and student-produced publishing in three categories: news publications,
yearbooks and class annuals, and literary publications.
TIME and TIME For Kids are all about great
writing. Its part of our mission to encourage young writers
in America to help them see the power and purpose of sharing
their writing and publishing, said Mr. Garton.
The 2002 winners are as follows:
LITERARY PUBLICATIONS:
- Elementary: Art & Literary Calendar, Lafayette Elementary
School, Washington, D.C.
- Middle School: Young Writers, Atlantic Middle School, Quincy,
MA
- High School: Montage, Greenhill High School, Addison, TX
- Video: Mrs. Wishy-Washy Goes to the Zoo, Roosevelt
Elementary School, Keego Harbor, MI
NEWS PUBLICATIONS:
- Elementary: The Fero Times, State Street Elementary School,
Skaneateles, NY
- Elementary Honorable Mention: The Eliot Spirit, C.W. Eliot
Elementary School, Tulsa, OK
- Middle School: The Daytime, Frank Ashley Day School, Newtonville,
MA

- High School Honorable Mention: Eagle, Glen Oak High School,

The judges felt that all of the winners represented exemplary
work, and that students showed a good blend of creativity and professional
pride in their production, said Mr. Garton.
This year, 120 entries were received from across the nation, nearly
doubling last years entries. The winners were selected by
a judging panel that included news professionals from TIME, TIME
For Kids, timeforkids.com, CNN and HBO.
Winners receive a visit from an editor or art director from TIME
or TIME for Kids for a day, as well as $500 in educational resources.
