Member of the Month Spotlight
An Interview with CEO of Brighter Child Inc., Sam Ifergan.
Q: Please describe your company
A: We are a private educational publisher dedicated
to making learning fun by creating wholesome enlightening
materials for children aged 3 to 12. We operate under
several brands including Brighter Child, Brighter Minds,
and Brighter Kids, and our company combines the best
of both worlds by offering software that works in conjunction
with conventional workbooks, flashcards and other educational
media to not only reinforce, but expand learning.
We have teamed up with some of the best licensing partners in the industry
in order to provide consumers with many wholesome and enjoyable educational
products featuring their favorite characters.
Q: Why did you decide to get involved in the international market?
A: There are many brands that are prevalent not only
in the U.S. but in other countries as well. For example,
we have just signed a licensing deal with Ragdoll Ltd.
to create products based on their popular new television
series, Boohbah TM. Ragdoll is a world leader in innovative
childrens programming, including the global phenomenon
Teletubbies TM, which has been sold to 84 broadcasters
in 61 countries and translated into 35 different languages.
In addition, the number of bilingual families in the
United States is constantly on the rise, so software
that plays in English, Spanish, or French is not only
a good seller overseas, but is very helpful to certain
vendors and families in the US market as well.
Q: How did you get involved in the international
market?
A: We were able to partner with others whose brands
and concepts had great popularity and mass appeal,
allowing us to expand rapidly in our distribution.
The name recognition of licensed characters in our
software allowed us to gain a foothold in the international
market.
Q: What would you recommend to others for getting into the international
market?
A: Choose well. Find characters and storylines with
established or forthcoming international audiences
and appeal. Find the best people to work with on translation
and distribution. Choosing the right partners can make
all the difference between success and failure. Once
you get your foot in the door, maintain all contacts
and you are in the international market!
Q: What was your greatest challenge getting into
the international market?
A: Locating partners was the greatest challenge, from
both a licensing and distribution perspective. We were
looking for partners that would allow us the absolute
best in brand recognition and product placement in
the countries we hoped to cultivate.
Q: Why did you decide to join AEP?
A: As an educational publisher, AEP is an obvious
perfect fit. AEP provides access to a wealth of information
and resources such as different events and conferences.
This year, we will be attending the Bologna Childrens
Book Fair in association with AEP. What a great way
to meet other people in our industry and have great
Italian food all at the same time!
