Tech-Based Curriculum Takes Major Step in CA

Reuters reported Tuesday that nearly half of all California elementary schools have adopted Pearson Education's computer-based social studies curriculum over traditional textbook-based programs. This according to Pearson's half-year results, disclosed Monday.

The program, developed by the company's elementary arm, Pearson Scott Foresman, employs a multimedia approach that includes printed text, online activities, digital video clips, and state-aligned assessments. However, according to one media analyst, while Pearson may have the "first-mover" advantage, technologically the program could be replicated fairly easily. The importance of the California adoption lies in its impact on the industry.

"All of their competitors are going to have to answer to this now," said the source, who asked not to be named in the Reuters report because of bank rules restricting public comments.

Pearson CEO Marjorie Scardino admits the company didn't expect to find a return In California, but now plans to pursue similar contracts in other states and other subject areas.

"Digital development costs us less and takes less time," Scardino told Reuters. "We're speeding up how we're rolling out those kinds of programs."
