Development a Major Concern Among Education Professionals
According to a survey of last month's T+L2 Conference registrants,
two of the biggest challenges school districts face in educational
technology are funding and integration. However, another
main concern among the survey's 400-plus respondents is teacher
preparedness; 85 percent noted that their new teachers were only
somewhat prepared or not prepared in effectively integrating technology
into the classroom.
"This survey shows that school districts have a lot of work
to do in the area of professional development to help teachers
understand how to use technology tools to enhance student learning
and performance," said NSBA executive director Anne L. Bryant
in a press release last month.
On the other hand, 63 percent of respondents felt their school
district's curriculum was excellent or good in preparing students
for the 21st century.
Other key findings from the survey:
-90 percent of respondents said the use of technology in the classroom
has increased educational opportunities for students, mainly evidenced
by an increase in student engagement
-78 percent said home access to the Internet was a problem for
low-income students
-nearly 38 percent of respondents said their school district offers
one-to-one learning initiatives, with 48 percent reporting those
initiatives have been in place between one and two years.
The survey was conducted by the National School Boards Association
(NSBA). Participants included technology specialists, teachers,
administrators, and school board members.
