Online Learning Takes a Step Forward in Public Schools
Last week, TheChristian Science Monitor reported
on the growing number of online learning programs in public schools,
citing results from a July 2005 study conducted by Learning Point
Associates. The study found that 70 percent of the nation's public
schools now offer at least one distance education course, as compared
with 9 percent in the 2002-03 school year. This push is only likely
to increase as states begin to consider legislation requiring online
components as prerequisites to graduation. Michigan took the lead
in this movement last week, passing a law that requires every student
in the state to take part in some form of online instruction before
they graduate.
Proponents of this movement feel that online learning offers students
flexibility in their schedules, a wider array of courses from which
to choose, and the opportunity to learn in an environment (the
internet) in which they've grown up and feel a great deal of comfort.
Critics contend that more studies measuring quality and efficacy
of online courses should be performed before states begin including
them as part of required curricula.
