Second Quarter Transactions Up in Education/Reference Sector
The education/reference publishing sector saw a total of 17 deals
in this year's second quarter versus eight in the same period last
year, but dollar volume was $180 million versus last year's $359
million, according to Whitestone Communications, a merger and acquisition
advisory firm. Last year's dollar volume was up due to Pearson's
$270 million purchase of American Guidance Service from WRC Media.
Pearson led the way this quarter with the following purchases:
-PowerSchool from Apple - iPod accessible content for students
and teachers
-Chancery Software - Real-time educational content
Paravia Bruno Mondadori Editori - Italian educational publisher
(Pearson acquired 80 %)
-Effective Educational Technologies - Online assessment and tutorial
programs
-National Evaluation Systems - State assessments for teacher certification
Other noteworthy deals in this year's second quarter include:
-the purchase by Touchstone Applied Science Associates of Questar
Educational Systems for $20 million
-Houghton-Mifflin's acquisition of Achievement Technologies for
$18.5 million
