New Study Explores Learning Disabilities Market Segment
A study released earlier this month claims substantial market
opportunities exist for basal supplementary, and niche publishers
interested in the serving the needs of the learning disabilities
market segment. Conducted by Lois Eskin Associates, in conjunction
with research specialist Charles Lundgren, the study examined the
needs, size, and scope of the learning disabilities market segment
in grades K-5. Some key findings of the study include:
* Approximately 75,000 special education teachers and 495,000
regular teachers have K-5 learning disabled students in their classrooms
* Total expenditures for materials and resources for learning
disabled (LD) students in grades K-5 were between $197 million
and $221 million in 2005
* Principals estimate teacher out-of-pocket expenditure for 2005
at about $12 million, while teachers indicated they spent a total
of $35 million of their own funds on learning disabled students
The study was conducted using mail survey techniques. Results
are based on usable interviews with over 500 principles and over
800 teachers.
