New 13-Digit ISBN Will Streamline International Trade
In a process akin to the Y2K software transition, the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) ordered a change in format
of the number used to track all published materials worldwide. The
International Standard Book Number (ISBN), currently a 10-digit
code, will be converted to 13 digits by January 1, 2007, increasing
the number of possible ISBNs and aligning publishers worldwide
with the 13-digit European Article Number.
