Report Predicts Back-to-School Spending Jump
According to results from a recent survey, total spending on back-to-school
shopping is estimated to reach $17.6 billion this year, up from
$13.4 billion last year. Spending on electronics - PCs, laptops,
PDAs, and calculators - will lead the way, jumping $1.5 billion
after a sharp decline in 2005.
The 2006 Back-to-School Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey,
conducted by BIGresearch and released by the National Retail Federation,
also found shifts in spending by region. Consumers in the West,
South and Midwest are all expected to spend more this year, while
those in the Northeast will spend an estimated $56 less (per family)
than in 2005.
The survey also found:
* discount stores are the most popular destination for back-to-school
shopping, followed by department stores, specialty shops, office
supply stores, drug stores, and online
* teenagers will spend an average of $28.99 of their own money
on back-to-school supplies, up from $20.47 last year
* spending on supplies, such as notebooks, folders, pencils, backpacks,
and lunchboxes, is expected to be around $86.22
