2005 GLI Facilitates Entry of Small- and Medium-Sized Companies
Into the International Market
Thousands of publishing professionals converged on the city of
Bologna, Italy, last week for the 42nd annual Bologna Children's
Book Fair (BCBF), the world's leading event for rights exchange
among publishers of children's content. While the Fair has
established itself as a decades-old tradition--this year featuring
1,100 exhibitors from 63 countries--its educational rights center,
the Global Learning Initiative (GLI), has been steadily building
a momentum of its own. A co-venture of AEP and the BCBF,
the GLI is now in its third year helping small- and medium-sized
businesses enter the international market.
Key business events of the 2005 GLI:
1. GLI Demonstration Classroom. The centerpiece of
the GLI Pavilion, the demonstration classroom played host to the
event's daily programming. Throughout each day of the Fair,
exhibitors from eight different countries demonstrated cutting-edge
educational products and learning solutions in front of an audience
of their peers. Also part of the Demonstration Classroom
programming was the Noon Speaker Series, featuring daily workshops
on such global topics as part-work publishing and localizing content
for the Asian market. Other highlights included the international
debut of "The Fly," LeapFrog Enterprises' new pen-top
computer, and a half-day forum on digital rights management. The
goal of the Demonstration Classroom is to broaden particpants'
knowledge of the market and keep them abreast of trends.
2. U.S. Commercial Service Appointments. Those
GLI exhibitors that took advantage of the U.S. Commercial Service's
specialized appointment service were treated to tailor-made meetings
with the international companies most pertinent to their business
needs. According to U.S. Commercial Service representative Barbara
Lapini, 12 export success stories have already been reported for
2005.
3. The GLI Awards. Presented on the final
day of the fair, the GLI Awards feature cutting-edge educational
products and learning solutions. Winners were decided on
by a panel of industry experts. This year's winners were:
"Food Face" - Saffron Pictures Ltd. (Ireland), for innovative
concept and design
"Britannica Discover Library" - Encyclopædia Britannica
(USA), for use of print materials in creative and innovative ways
"Yhaco" - Thinkup.net (Italy), for use
of new concepts in applied new ways
The GLI also featured networking receptions at the conclusion of
each day, underscoring the importance of face-to-face interaction
in building long-term, trusting relationships with foreign partners.
