Bush Nominates New ED Secretary

President Bush promptly confirmed rumors about his choice for the next Secretary of Education, nominating long-time adviser Margaret Spellings just four days after the resignation of current ED Secretary Rod Paige.  If approved by the Senate, she'll become only the second woman to hold the position since the ED Department's creation in 1979.

Spellings was Bush's senior adviser while he was governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000, and played an integral part in formulating the state education policy that would later act as a blueprint for NCLB.  Spellings also served in the White House during Bush's first term as the president's assistant for domestic policy.

The National Education Association, which Paige referred to as a "terrorist organization" earlier this year, has given its approval to Spellings' nomination.

"This is a great opportunity for the administration to change the tone of its discourse with the education community, particularly the 2.7 million members of the National Education Association who are in schools all over this nation," NEA President Reg Weaver said in a published statement. "We look forward to finding common ground with Ms. Spellings in her new role."
