ED Secretary Rod Paige Resigns

Secretary of Education Rod Paige, known for his firm backing of the No Child Left Behind Act, resigned his position in the president's Cabinet Monday. Paige is one of four Cabinet members--including Secretary of State Colin Powell, Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham--who have stepped down since President Bush's election to a second term. Although his future intentions are unclear, sources reported to the Associated Press that Paige does not have plans to retire.

A leading candidate to replace Paige is Margaret Spellings, Bush's domestic policy adviser who helped shape his school agenda when he was the Texas governor. Spellings has a keen interest in schools and may want the Cabinet-level education job.
