State Standards Database Ready for Use by Publishers

The non-profit JES & Co has just released a standards database for all fifty states and some U.S. territories called the Achievement Standards Network Toolkit. The toolkit will expand on the National Science Foundation's Achievement Standards Network, the authoritative electronic collection of all state and national standards. Funded by the NSF and covering English, science, and math, it is the most comprehensive digital tool of this type to date.

Over the past three years Diny Golder, Executive Director of JES & Co, has been directing the project. She believes the digital presentation will bridge the disconnect between publishers and the classroom.

There were three phases of the project, one for each year of the grant. In year one, JES & Co began by working with publishers to gain an understanding of the workflows and the types of data that would be incorporated. In that same year they worked with the State Education Technology Directors Association to create the standards tool. The next year was spent developing a common language that included the highly technical work of developing heavily documented XML standards. Now in the third year of the project, they have finalized the database and are in the process of getting the information to the publishers.

Access to the database has two levels--free access, which allows users to view information, and a subscription plan that allows users to download the standards and receive updates as they are made public.
