Ed. Publishers Influence STEM Legislation
Rita Ferrandino of Science Companion is a long time AEP member
and supporter whose recent involvement in the passage of the America
Competes Act resulted in a victory for the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math) publishing community. Ms. Ferrandino recently
answered some questions about her involvement with the legislation
and provided insight into why the America COMPETES Act matters
to supplemental publishers.
Q: Can you describe your role in passing the STEM legislation?
As a member of the STEM Education Coalition and the U.S. Chamber
of Commerce's Business Coalition for Student Achievement, Science
Companion advocated for increasing federal funding for STEM education
at all levels.
Q: What do you think are the critical elements to supplemental
publishers?
The legislation requires that state and local educational agencies
requesting Math Now grants must assure that the instruction materials
used in K-9 classrooms, even supplemental instructional materials,
are research-based and demonstrate a record of effectiveness. Obviously
there are wide implications of this requirement for supplemental
publishers.
Q: How do you see the laws affecting STEM education in the
U.S. long term?
The passage of the America Competes Act is a huge victory for
the STEM education community. The bipartisan nature of the legislation
symbolizes a strong commitment on the part of the Congress to commit
significant resources and attention to STEM education. Not only
does the law authorize substantial funding increases for our research
agencies, but more importantly, it strengthens educational opportunities
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in our nations'
schools.
Q: Do you recommend that other AEP members get involved in
the legislative process and why?
Absolutely. The continuing technological revolution and the reality
of a truly global economy are transforming the workplace and creating
a demand for skills that too few of our schools are providing. The
passage of the America Competes Act is a result of long-term participation
in lobbying and grassroots efforts to make Congress aware of these
issues. The education community, particularly the AEP membership,
has a responsibility to urge Congress to continue to support advancements
in STEM education nationwide.
