Bush Introduces New Math and Science Initiative
During last week's state of the union address, President George
W. Bush asserted a commitment to economic growth, immigration,
health care, energy, and the importance of leading "the world
in human talent and creativity." While he warned of
continued cuts in non-security discretionary funding - including
education programs - he also introduced a new education initiative
intended to strengthen U.S. presence in the fields of mathematics
and the physical sciences.
The American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI), with an estimated
cost of $136 billion over the next ten years, aims to:
-Double the federal commitment to the most critical basic research
programs in the physical sciences over the next ten years.
-Make permanent an existing research and development tax credit.
-Encourage children to take more math and science, and make sure
that the courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations.
-Train 70,000 advanced-placement courses in math and science high
school teachers.
-Bring 30,000 math and science professionals to teach in classrooms
and give early help to students who struggle with math.
