ED Proposes NIMAS Standards, Opens Comment Period
In a proposal released June 29, the Office of Special Education
and Rehabilitative Services set forth guidelines for a National
Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS). In
accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA), these guidelines would set a national standard for converting
textbooks and other instructional materials into formats accessible
to students with disabilities that prevent them from reading print. NIMAS
applies to print instructional materials required by state or local
educational agencies (LEAs) for classroom use.
The Department of Education announced that parties interested
in commenting on NIMAS have until September 12, 2005, to do so. Comments
may be submitted by visiting http://www.regulations.gov, or by
sending an email to osersnimascomments@ed.gov with "NIMAS
Comments" in the subject line. Written comments may
be sent to:
