National Math Panel Holds Third Hearing, Open Registration for Public Testimony
On September 13 and 14, the National Math Panel will hold the
third in a series of public hearings. The event is being held in
Cambridge, MA, at the Broad Institute and will include testimony
from the National Science Foundation, National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics, and a number of textbook publishers. Interested
parties may observe during the morning session of the first day,
and public testimony is scheduled for the morning of the second
day.
The National Math Panel was formed by executive order on April
18, 2006, in response to the growing concern that U.S. students
are underperforming when compared with their international peers
in advanced mathematics. In May, Secretary Spellings named the
17 experts and six ex-officio members who comprise the Panel. Modeled
after the National Reading Panel, it is designed to investigate
the most effective instructional strategies for math and make recommendations
on how to improve math achievement for all students. The panel
was one of only a few components of the Bush administration's American
Competitiveness Initiative that was funded in the FY 2007 budget.
There will be a continued focus on scientifically based research
(SBR) as the panel will examine and summarize the scientific evidence
related to the teaching and learning of mathematics. One proposal
based on SBR is the Math Now for Elementary School Students project
that would use the recommendations of the National Math Panel to
promote SBR and promising practices in mathematics instruction
to prepare students for more rigorous coursework in middle and
high school, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Similar
to the Reading First and Striving Readers programs, Math Now is
intended to increase math proficiency so that students are able
to successfully complete algebra courses. This proposal was not
funded in the pending FY 2007 House or Senate Budget.
