Failing Schools Strain to Meet US Standard
According to a recent NY Times report, No Child Left
Behind is branding more and more schools as failing, but not producing
radical change. The article, which appeared Tuesday, reports that
more than 1,000 of California's 9,500 schools are branded as chronic
failures, and all 6,063 of the state's public schools serving poor
students could potentially need restructuring by 2014. In Florida
441 schools could be candidates for closing, while 49 schools in
the city of Baltimore, Maryland, alone have failed to reach achievement
targets for five years or more.
However, because the cost of restructuring can be so taxing, the
US Department of Education is more interested in helping states
figure out what works than in punishment.
