Highlights from the FY06 Budget Proposal
The Bush Administration's deficit-conscious FY06 budget proposal
was met with a flurry of complaints across the nation. The
plan would cut or eliminate about 150 non-defense programs, as
the president attempts to make good on his promise of cutting the
federal deficit in half by 2009. According to the NY Times,
education would account for 48 of those.
* About $4.7 billion would be redirected from 64 education programs
to finance other initiatives, mainly aimed at high school students,
special education and college loan financing
* $13.3 billion would be spent on Title I, for schools in low-income
communities
* Funding for the Safe and Drug-Free School program would be eliminated
* $2 billion would be cut from high school programs like vocational
education, Upward Bound, GEAR UP and Talent Search, that help prepare
students from disadvantaged backgrounds for college
* IDEA funding would increase to $11.1 billion
Overall, financing for the Department of Education would see a
decrease of about one percent, or approximately $56 billion.
