Currently in Congress
The 109th Congress convened in Washington on January 3. The
list of legislation introduced included a number of items pertaining
to education, a few of which are listed below:
H.R. 27 (McKeon, R-Cal.) , introduced legislation to enhance the
workforce investment system of the Nation by strengthening one-stop
career centers, providing for more effective governance arrangements,
promoting access to a more comprehensive array of employment, training,
and related services, establishing a targeted approach to serving
youth, and improving performance accountability (Education and

H.R. 49 (Biggert, R-Ill.) , introduced legislation to amend Title
V of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to
raise awareness of eating disorders and to create educational
programs concerning them (Education and the Workforce; Energy
and Commerce).
H.R. 224 (Strickland, D-Ohio) , introduced legislation to amend
Part A of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
of 1965 regarding adequate yearly progress and assessments (Education
and the Workforce).
H.R. 102 (Green, D-Texas) , introduced legislation to amend the
Communications Act of 1934 to provide for the use of unexpended
universal service funds in low-income schools (Energy and Commerce).
H.R. 117 (Holt, D-NJ) , introduced legislation to amend the Internal
Revenue Code of 1986 to make higher education more affordable
by providing a tax deduction for higher education expenses (Ways
and Means; Education and the Workforce).
H.R. 130 (Kennedy, R-Minn.) , introduced legislation to amend the
General Education Provisions Act to clarify the definition of
a student regarding family educational and privacy rights (Education
and the Workforce).
H.R. 127 (Jones, D-Ohio) , introduced legislation to provide loan
forgiveness to social workers who work for child protective agencies
(Education and the Workforce).
H.R. 128 (Jones, D-Ohio) , introduced legislation to establish
a demonstration incentive program within the Department of Education
to promote installation of fire sprinkler systems, or other fire
suppression or prevention technologies, in qualified student
housing and dormitories (Education and the Workforce).
H.R. 205 (Serrano, D-NY) , introduced legislation to permit members
of the House of Representatives to donate used computer equipment
to public elementary and secondary schools designated by the
members (Administration).
