CA Teachers Lose Tax Breaks for Class Expenses

A California tax credit that reimbursed teachers up to $1500 for school supplies was suspended this year due to budget problems, adding California to the majority of states in the country who do not offer tax breaks to their teachers.  Meanwhile, a similar federal tax deduction, providing teachers up to $250 in credit, also expired this year.  The National Education Association and some lawmakers are working to reinstate the federal teacher deduction, however the California credit has been suspended until 2007.
