USED Issues Tutoring Guidance for NCLB

The Department of Education recently put out a new manual to states and school districts outlining their roles in implementing supplemental educational services in schools that fail to meet adequate yearly progress (AYP).  The 60-plus page booklet clarifies the steps states and districts need to take and is also intended to help parents get a better grasp of the concept and connect them with programs that offer tutoring and other academic enrichment activities to students.

"We hope it enables more families to access high-quality supplemental educational services programs, and helps schools across the country close the achievement gap," commented Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings in a recent department press release.

The updated guidance also includes a "model" parent letter, which was added to help districts inform parents of the opportunity to enroll their children in free tutoring services.
