New Online Resource for Teachers Promotes Global Citizenship
In the days following the tsunami disaster in South Asia, our
nation's students were searching for answers. They looked
to their parents and teachers to get a better understanding of
the events that were taking place. As AEP reported in January
("The Role of Education in Tsunami Relief Efforts"),
numerous publishers responded with online resources and classroom
tools to explain what caused the disaster and what was being done
to help those affected by it.
The U.S. Fund for UNICEF recognized that such global awareness
is a lesson students should be taught constantly, not just when
disaster strikes. At the beginning of May, they launched
a new website offering resources and tools for teaching global
citizenship in the classroom. Currently, the website features
information on donations to tsunami relief efforts and their impact,
descriptions of how UNICEF operates during emergencies, stories
of hope about children and families affected by the devastation,
audio blogs of teachers and students who contributed to the relief
efforts, and "discussion starters" for teachers to engage
students in learning about the disaster. In the future, it
will provide information on any number of topics that are of global
concern.
TeachUNICEF.org was spearheaded by U.S. Fund for UNICEF board
member and past president of AEP, Leanna Landsmann.
