Summary of the Latest Research

- A study released in March confirmed what many educators fear - the narrowing of the curriculum. It found that schools are spending more time in reading, math, and science, while cutting back on social studies, civics, geography, languages, and the arts. The report, Academic Atrophy: The Condition of the Liberal Arts in America's Public Schools, was conducted by the Council for Basic Education.

- NetDay recently presented results to Congress from a survey of the nation's students taken in November 2003. Voices and Views from Today's Tech-Savvy Students gives insight into the role of technology in students' lives, and will be used by the Department of Education to form the new National Education Technology Plan.

- The Urban Institute published a report in March, Can Teacher Quality Be Effective Assessed?, examining the relationship between certification of teachers and elementary level student achievement. The findings, based on data from North Carolina, indicate that certified teachers are more effective than those that are not certified.
