Oregon Ed Professors Proponents of NCLB and "Scientifically-Based Research"

Despite a slew of critics who argue that the Bush administration's education policy has stifled creativity and brought rigidity into the classroom, a group of education professors at the University of Oregon contend that the No Child Left Behind movement is the answer to the country's education woes.

"Science provides stability," Doug Carnine, director of UO's National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators and long-time Bush consultant, reported to CNN.com.  According to Carnine, up until recently, education had generally been a philosophy-based system, founded mainly on the skills of public speakers.  However, the professors at Oregon insist that in order to see the results called for by NCLB--namely that all children, regardless of their background, be at grade level in reading and math by 2014--a more disciplined system with quantifiable results must be implemented.
