Charter Schools' Representation to be Diminished in Next Federal
Report
The number of charter schools represented in the next Schools
and Staffing Survey will be reduced by over 70 percent, according
to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Education. The
survey, a federal report conducted by the National Center for Education
Statistics, provides a detailed national profile of public, private,
and charter schools.
While the drastic cutback was implemented out of practicality—the
methodology for surveying charter schools involves visiting each
school individually—it comes at a pivotal point in the development
of the federally-funded self-governed schools. Under the
No Child Left Behind Act, charter schools have been prescribed
as one remedy for chronically failing schools; however, in a recent
comparison of national test scores, students in charter schools
were found to be trailing comparable students in traditional public
schools.
