Renewed Media Interest Supports Education

The education sections of today’s newspapers are flooded with headlines about falling test scores and articles arguing the allocation of federal education funding.  Because of this jargon-laden, and often derogatory, media coverage of the field, many people have become indifferent to current education practices.  However, the distribution of a new advice column on education might help to bring a more positive light to the field, and subsequently, bring education--and its products and practice--back into the national spotlight.

“A+ Advice for Parents: How to Help Your Child Succeed in School,” is a weekly column authored by nationally recognized education writer and editor Leanna Landsmann, and distributed in newspapers nationwide through United Feature Syndicate.  Its main goal is to get parents more involved in the education process by providing professional advice in plain English.

“Research shows that parents are interested in information about how to help their children in school,” says United Feature Syndicate’s Executive Editorial Director, Marianne Goldstein, “but they don’t want a column preaching about educational reform trends.”

“A+ Advice” offers practical answers to questions parents might have about curriculum, classroom, homework, and social issues.  Each week, the column features advice from some of the nation’s top teachers and education experts, along with print and Web resources related to each topic.  But while the parent audience may be the most obvious beneficiary, the potential impact of Landsmann’s column on the education industry goes far beyond that.

“‘A+ Advice’ supports excellence in the industry,” says Landsmann, an AEP Hall of Fame member and former president of TIME for Kids magazine.  Each column represents a chance for an innovative teacher to broadcast their ideas beyond their own classroom, or for a publisher to showcase its award-winning product to a nationwide audience.

For years, parents have been identified as one of the most important influences in a child’s education, but according to Landsmann, they’ve been one of the most difficult to reach.  In this respect, “A+ Advice” is an invaluable communication tool, because it acts as a direct line through which information flows freely in both directions.  Parents now have access to the expert advice that they need, and teachers and publishers can keep up to date on the issues that parents want to know about.

At a time when newspapers are dropping columns and comic strips by the dozens, such wide acceptance ofa syndicated column on education demonstrates the significance the topic still holds among both parents and the media.  Educational publishers can gain from this nationwide attention by providing Landsmann with a foundation of expertise and advice.  Recommend a source or a relevant topic for discussion to Leanna Landsmann (contact info listed to the right).
