UT Teacher Training Program Turns Out Top Educators
Now in its tenth year, UTeach, the unique and successful teacher
training program at the University of Texas, has caught the eye
of education experts and other colleges and universities across
the country. According to a report in the Austin American-Statesman,
10 unspecified institutions will announce the implementation of
similar programs this month, using part of a $125 million grant
from Exxon Mobile Corp.
UTeach, which has doubled the number of math and science teachers
it produces since its inception, takes an alternative approach
to teacher training, producing science and math majors with teacher
certification as opposed to education majors with a focus on a
specific subject area. The model was hailed in a 2005 report by
the National Academies Press and has proven successful as about
70 percent of UTeach students are still teaching five years after
they enter the profession compared with about 50 percent of teachers
nationally.
