NEA Renews Push for Higher Teacher Salaries
The National Education Association (NEA) announced late last week
its intent to push for higher starting salaries for the nation's
teachers, according to an Associated Press report. The announcement
follows closely on the heels of an NEA report that found teacher
salary levels have remained stagnant over the last decade, rising
only 2.9 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars.
"A career in teaching offers many intrinsic rewards," said
NEA president Reg Weaver in a June 23 statement. "But
teachers should never have to choose between doing what they love
and supporting their families. We can't continue to ask them
to fulfill such an important mission without providing the support
they deserve and need to remain in the profession."
The push comes as part of the NEA's broader goal of closing the
achievement gap, the idea being that the promise of a higher salary
will help schools attract and maintain more and better-qualified
teachers.
According to the National School Supply and Equipment Association,
last year, teachers spent an average of $458 out-of-pocket on classroom
expenses. This number is not likely to increase as long as
starting teacher salaries remain the same.
