Capitol Hill Briefing Addresses STEM Teaching Crisis
eSchool News reports that the American Association of
Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) and the US Senate's STEM
Education Caucus hosted a briefing on the shortage of highly qualified
instructors in the fields of science, technology, engineering,
and math June 21 on Capitol Hill. According to the speakers at
the event, shortages of highly-qualified math and science teachers
exist in most states across the country, resulting in a circular
effect that has become problematic not only to the STEM fields,
but to the field of teaching. Poor teaching has produced math-phobic
citizens who are increasingly unprepared to pursue careers in these
subject areas, much less pursue jobs teaching these subjects.
The panel offered a number of recommendations to help remedy the
issue:
- competitive and equitable salaries
- high-quality teacher education (possibly at the government's
expense)
- mentoring/induction programs
- ongoing professional learning embedded in 10 or more hours a
week of planning and professional development
- requiring clinical experience before becoming licensed teachers
- supporting teachers' development of content knowledge
