Pittsburgh School District Hires Teachers to Write Curriculum

Pittsburgh Public Schools has decided to cut $2.4 million from a contract with a curriculum development firm and use the money to pay its own teachers to develop some of the new courses, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The $8.4 million contract was signed in March 2006, but Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt was prompted to reconsider when the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers complained about the first several courses provided by the firm. Teachers said they were forced to cover materials too quickly, described their curriculum training as inadequate, and said some materials, especially those for higher-achieving students, weren't rigorous enough, according to the Post-Gazette.
