Governors Discuss Problems, Solutions for High Schools

The nation's governors converged on Washington, D.C., this weekend for the first National Education Summit on High Schools.  According to the Associated Press, the event drew at least 45 governors from the 50 states and five U.S. territories in addition to top names in U.S. industry and education.

The main topics of discussion were student underachievement and drop-out rates, the decreasing value of the high school diploma, and the inability of high schools to prepare youth for either the workforce or the rigors of higher education.

“Training the workforce of tomorrow with today’s high schools is like trying to teach kids about today’s computers with a 50-year-old mainframe,” said Microsoft Corporation chairman and Summit keynote speaker Bill Gates.  Gates, whose Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed $733 million to high schools in the last five years, is one of the biggest advocates of improving education.

As a result of the two-day event, 13 states--comprising nearly a third of the nation’s high schools--have expressed their intent to stiffen high school standards.  The coalition includes Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.
