NGA Annual Meeting Marks End of One-Year Push for High School
Reform
Outgoing chair Gov. Mark Warner (D-VA) stressed the importance
of education to economic and national security and unveiled a plan
for the standardization of high school graduation and drop out
data at the National Governors Association's (NGA) 97th Annual
Meeting, which took place last week in Des Moines, Iowa. The event
represented the one-year mark for the NGA's high school reform
initiative, which calls for states to demand more from their high
school students.
At a ceremony on Sunday, 45 governors and 12 national organizations
signed onto Graduation Counts: A Compact on State High School Graduation
Data, marking the first time in our nation's history that states
have adopted a common definition for their high school graduation
rate. Having this standard measure will help states and districts
implement NCLB accountability standards at the secondary level.
