MD Educators Believe NCLB Science Tests May Produce Sobering
Results
Elementary and middle school students in Maryland were tested
in science last week for the first time under the No Child Left
Behind Act (NCLB), and, according to a Washington Post report,
some area educators feel the results might be sobering.
"I think this test will open up some eyes," said Brian
Friess, a fifth-grade teacher at Highland Elementary School in
Silver Spring.
According to teachers and principals, many elementary schools
offer half as much science instruction as they did before NCLB,
often splitting the time with social studies instruction. Some
middle schools that used to offer a full year of science and social
studies now only give a semester of each.
