NCES Report Finds Rapid Minority Growth in Schools
A recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics
found that the nation's population of Hispanic students now makes
up 42 percent of total public school enrollment, up from 22 percent
in 1972. The Condition of Education, a Congressionally
mandated statistical survey of the nation's education system, found
that enrollment for all minority students has grown in all regions
of the country, but the Hispanic population has shown especially
rapid growth. In 2005, the last year for which data were available,
one of five public school students was Hispanic.
Other highlights of the report include:
* The Midwest continues to be home to the largest population of
white students at 74 percent.
* Twenty percent of school-age children speak a language other
than English at home.
* The number of high school students taking Advanced Placement
courses more than doubled from 1997 to 2005, with the numbers of
Blacks and Hispanics growing faster than those for other racial/ethnic
groups.
