Mayors' Book Clubs Support Early Literacy
A number of mayors around the country are showing their support
for literacy by launching book-of-the-month clubs for children
at the preschool level and younger. According to USA Today,
a leader in these efforts is Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, whose
book club is in its fourth and expected to reach 8,500 pre-kindergartners
in Duval County, FL, this year. This year, any child in preschool
will automatically become a member and get a backpack full of books
and treats. Funding comes from the city, grants, and donations.
Other early reading programs:
- Charleston, South Carolina's Born to Read program gives parents
a reading kit when their baby is born
- Longmont Colorado's mayor, Julia Pirnack, started a book club
last April that reaches out to every 3- and 4-year-old. Books are
in English and Spanish.
