MD, Other States to Consider New Math Curriculum

Over the next several months, math educators in Maryland will decide if students in their districts might benefit from a more streamlined curriculum, as outlined in a report released late last year by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The report argues that current math instruction covers too much too fast, and therefore doesn't allow teachers and students to examine concepts in depth. It recommends covering three essential concepts, or "Focal Points," per year as opposed to the current standard of 50 to 60 objectives.

The new Focal Points are also likely to cause a major shift in the content in textbooks. "There are 750-page math textbooks," said NCTM President Francis Fennell in a recent Baltimore Sun article. Faced with hundreds of state standards around the country, he said, publishers decided to try to cover everything that might be taught.

According to the Sun report, Maryland is one of more than a dozen states that are weighing the switch.
