Philadelphia in Search of More Latino Teachers
Philadelphia's Holy Family University, in partnership with a sister
university in Puerto Rico and a local Latino advocacy agency, announced
a new program to help the Philadelphia School District cultivate
more Latino and bilingual teachers.
Each year beginning in August, Aspira Inc. will identify and mentor
up to 25 school district seniors who will be enrolled in the teacher-education
courses. The students will spend the first two years at the Pontifical
Catholic University of Puerto Rico, where they will be immersed
in Latino culture and language. They'll then return to Holy Family
for the final two years, concentrating on teacher-education courses.
Under the new program, graduates will be guaranteed teaching jobs
in the district, which has struggled for years to increase the
number of Latino teachers as its student population rises. More
than 15 percent of students are Latino in the Philadelphia School
District, compared to 2.7 percent of teachers.
